  • Thomas Becket was assassinated there. This place is in the cathedral in Canterbury.Thomas Becket  was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He was in conflict with Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church and was assassinated by knights of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death he was declared a saint by Pope Alexander III. width:640;;height:480
  • On December 29th, 1170, four knights, Reginald Fitzurse, Hugh de Moreville, William de Tracy, and Richard le Breton, met in an inn near Canterbury Cathedral to prepare the murder of Thomas Becket . The place where the knights met is today known as Conquest House. width:640;;height:480
  • Becket's shrine soon became the most important place in the country for pilgrims to visit. width:640;;height:480
  • Indeed, soon after Becket was assassinated , a lot of pilgrims came from all over the world to pray on his shrine . Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales in which he told the stories of these pilgrims.
